Knockdown texture
The most common texture in Southwest Florida homes. Compound is spattered, allowed to set briefly, then flattened with a knockdown knife. Timing controls how flat the peaks become.
A patched wall that is perfectly flat in the middle of a knockdown or orange peel texture stands out every time light hits it, even after painting.

Wall texture matching means identifying the existing texture, recreating it on repaired areas with the right tools and compound consistency, and blending the edges into the surrounding wall. It is tested on scrap board first, then applied, allowed to dry, primed and painted. Sarasota homes commonly have knockdown, orange peel or hand-troweled finishes.
Texture is the reason many good drywall patches still look obvious. A hole can be filled perfectly flat, but if the wall around it has a knockdown pattern, the smooth patch looks like a window cut into the texture. Matching is a craft of its own. The size of the splatter, the consistency of the compound, the timing of the knockdown and the pressure of the trowel all change the look, and two walls in the same house sometimes have slightly different textures because they were sprayed on different days.
We match texture after drywall repairs, plumbing and electrical openings, wall removals, popcorn ceiling removal and room additions. Before touching your wall, we practice on a piece of scrap drywall, adjusting until the pattern lines up with yours. Then we feather the edges of the new texture into the existing wall so there is no hard border. The result gets primed and painted along with the surrounding surface, since even a perfect texture match will show if it has a different sheen than the rest of the wall.

A finer sprayed texture that looks like the skin of an orange. Matching it depends on compound thickness, air pressure and nozzle size, so we test before applying.
Hand-troweled finishes often found in Mediterranean-style homes. These are applied freehand with a curved trowel, building layers to mimic the depth of the surrounding wall.
Smooth walls are the hardest to patch invisibly. We skim coat a wider area and sand it flat so the repair has no ridge or dip under side light from windows.
After popcorn removal or ceiling repairs, we can match or replace texture on ceilings, from light knockdown to smooth, so the ceiling looks uniform from wall to wall.
New texture is feathered into existing texture, primed with drywall primer and painted with the surrounding surface so color and sheen are consistent across the wall.

Most production homes built in the Sarasota area over the last few decades have knockdown walls, with orange peel common in bathrooms and closets. Newer communities in Lakewood Ranch, Palmer Ranch and North Port tend toward lighter knockdown or smooth finishes. Older Mediterranean Revival houses and some 1980s custom homes feature hand-troweled skip trowel or Spanish lace textures that cannot be sprayed. Mid-century homes may have smooth plaster walls. We identify which texture you have before quoting, because each is matched differently.
Humidity matters with texture work. Compound dries more slowly in muggy air, and knockdown timing is all about catching the compound at the right moment between wet and set. On humid summer days, we adjust the mix and wait longer before knocking down. In homes that have been closed up without air conditioning, we bring the indoor humidity down before working. Texture applied over damp drywall, often after a leak, can crack or lift later, so we confirm surfaces are dry before starting.
We examine the wall in raking light, note the texture type, pattern size and depth, and check whether nearby walls share the same finish or vary slightly.
Repairs are finished flat and sanded, and the surrounding area is lightly sanded or cleaned so the new texture bonds to both the patch and the existing wall.
We spray or trowel test pieces, adjusting compound thickness, pressure and timing until the sample matches your wall, then compare it right next to the existing texture.
Texture goes on the patch and slightly past it, feathering into the old pattern. Knockdown is flattened at the right moment for a matching peak height.
After full drying, the area is primed and painted. We usually paint the full wall so the patch and the rest of the surface share the same color and sheen.
We price wall texture matching after seeing the job, and the written quote lists every item below that applies.

In most Sarasota homes with knockdown or orange peel, a skilled match plus fresh paint makes a patch very hard to find. Hand-troweled finishes and older plaster are trickier, but they can usually be blended closely. Painting the whole wall afterward makes the biggest difference, since sheen differences show more than texture does.
Knockdown is the most common, especially in homes built from the 1980s onward. Orange peel shows up often in bathrooms, closets and some newer construction. Older Mediterranean-style and custom homes may have skip trowel or Spanish lace, while mid-century houses sometimes have smooth plaster walls.
Yes, this is one of the most common reasons people call us. Plumbers and electricians often leave square openings patched flat. We finish the drywall properly, match the surrounding texture, and paint the area so you would not know the wall had ever been opened up.
Yes. If you prefer a modern smooth wall, we can skim coat over the existing knockdown or orange peel, sand it flat and prime it for paint. It takes several thin coats and good lighting to get a level finish, so it costs more than matching, but it changes the feel of a room.
