Hardware handling
Knobs, deadbolts, kick plates and knockers are removed and bagged, or masked tightly when removal risks damaging the finish. Hinges are protected so they keep their factory finish and swing freely.
A sun-faded, chalky or peeling front door drags down the whole entrance, and a cheap repaint in direct western sun can blister and stick in the frame within a summer.

Front door painting means taking the door to a clean, sanded surface, masking or removing hardware, priming the right way for steel, fiberglass or wood, and finishing with two coats of exterior enamel. In Sarasota we pick colors and products that handle strong sun so the door stays smooth and doesn't stick.
The front door is the one painted surface every guest touches and studies up close, so flaws that would disappear on a wall become obvious. Brush marks, drips on the hinges, paint on the weatherstripping and a door that sticks against its frame are the usual signs of a rushed job. Doing it right takes more prep and patience than the size of the surface would suggest, which is why our painters treat a single door as its own careful project.
Material decides the method. Steel doors need any rust spots cleaned and treated, then a primer for metal. Fiberglass needs a scuff and a bonding primer, and sometimes a gel stain if you want to keep a wood look. Solid wood doors move with humidity, so all six sides need sealing, including the top and bottom edges that most painters skip. Hardware is removed or carefully masked, weatherstripping is protected, and the door is left open to cure so it does not stick in the frame.

We clean off grime and wax, sand old paint to dull the gloss and smooth out runs, and fill dings with an exterior filler so the new finish lies flat.
Steel gets a rust-inhibiting metal primer, fiberglass gets a bonding primer, and bare wood gets an exterior wood primer. The right base is what keeps the topcoat from peeling.
On wood doors we finish the top and bottom edges as well as the faces and sides. Unsealed edges soak up humidity, causing swelling, sticking and paint failure at the corners.
Two coats of exterior enamel are laid off in the direction of the panels and rails for a smooth surface without lap marks, in the sheen that suits your house.
The door frame and brick mold are usually painted at the same time so the entrance looks finished. Weatherstripping is masked and the threshold is cleaned and protected.

Which way your entrance faces matters more here than most places. A west-facing front door in Sarasota takes several hours of intense afternoon sun, and dark colors can get hot enough to soften paint and make it stick to weatherstripping. Fiberglass and steel door makers often caution against very dark colors on unshaded doors for that reason. If you want navy, black or deep red on a sunny door, we look at heat-reflective formulations or suggest the shade of a covered entry.
Homes on the barrier islands and along the bays see salt air that pits hardware and corrodes steel door skins from the bottom edge up. We treat any rust spots before priming so they do not bleed through. Wood doors, including the solid mahogany and cypress doors found on many Mediterranean Revival and mid-century homes, swell in the humid months, so we seal every edge. If you live in an HOA community, we can work within approved door colors; many associations publish an accent palette.
We schedule front door work early in a dry day so the door can stand open to cure, and we talk through security and pets if it needs to stay partly open for several hours.
Hardware comes off, the glass in sidelights and door lites is masked, and we lay protection on the floor inside and the porch outside to catch any sanding dust.
Surfaces are sanded smooth, dents filled and sanded again, then primed for the material. Rust spots on steel are cleaned to bare metal and spot-primed before full priming.
We brush recesses and roll flat sections, then tip off each area in the grain direction. The second coat follows after proper drying so the finish builds hard and even.
Once cured enough to handle, hardware goes back on, weatherstripping masking comes off, and we open and close the door several times to make sure nothing sticks or rubs.
We price front door painting after seeing the job, and the written quote lists every item below that applies.

Yes. Fiberglass takes paint well once it is cleaned of mold release residue and grime, lightly scuffed and primed with a bonding primer. We avoid heavy sanding that could cut into the molded grain. If you want to keep a wood look, a gel stain followed by a clear exterior topcoat is another option for fiberglass doors.
It can, especially on steel or fiberglass doors that face west with no overhang. Dark colors absorb heat, which can soften paint, warp some door skins and make the finish stick to weatherstripping. We look at your exposure during the walk-through and may suggest a heat-reflective product or a slightly lighter shade.
Most front door painting is done in one day, but the door needs to stay open or ajar for several hours between coats and after the last coat so the enamel firms up. We plan the work around your schedule and pets. Hardware usually goes back on the same afternoon or the next morning.
We can, and many owners ask for it, especially when the inside face is also faded or scratched or when the outside color is changing and the edges would show. The inside often gets a different color to match interior trim. Painting both faces at once is efficient since hardware is already off.
