Removal and labeling
Decorative shutters are unfastened, labeled by window and taken to a work area. Old screws or clips that have rusted out are replaced with corrosion-resistant fasteners on reinstall.
Faded, chalky or peeling shutters make the windows look tired, and painting them in place with the wrong product leads to drips on the stucco and quick fading.

Shutter painting means cleaning, sanding and priming each shutter with a product suited to its material, then finishing with exterior enamel. We often take decorative shutters down to paint every louver evenly, while Bahama and colonial storm shutters are painted in a way that keeps their hinges and fasteners working.
Shutters are small surfaces that carry a lot of the house's character. Crisp shutters in a strong color sharpen the whole front elevation, while faded ones look tired even on a freshly painted house. They are also fussy to paint well. Louvers have dozens of edges and slots that collect drips, and the backs and edges of shutters that were never painted can absorb moisture. Painting them hanging on the wall almost always leaves a ring of overspray or brush marks on the stucco behind.
Our usual approach is to take decorative shutters down, number them so each goes back to its own window, and paint them on stands where we can reach every slat. That also lets us paint the wall behind them, which is often a different, less faded color than the rest of the house. Functional storm shutters, such as Bahama and colonial styles, are painted with care around hinges, latches and fasteners so they still close properly when a storm comes.

Vinyl, wood, composite and aluminum shutters each need different prep. We identify the material first so we use the right cleaner, primer and finish for lasting adhesion.
Louvers trap dirt, pollen and mildew. Each shutter is washed, rinsed and dried thoroughly so paint bonds to the shutter surface, not to a film of grime.
Vinyl can warp if painted much darker than its original color. We use paints formulated for vinyl that limit heat buildup, and talk through color choices that are safe.
Spraying with back-brushing gets paint into every slot and edge without heavy buildup. Backs and edges are coated as well to keep moisture out of wood shutters.
Bahama and colonial storm shutters keep moving hinges, arms and latches clear of paint. We test that each shutter still opens, closes and locks before calling it done.

Sarasota's sun fades shutter colors faster than almost anything else on a house. Deep greens, blues and blacks on south and west elevations can lose much of their depth within a few years, and vinyl shutters that started out a dark color often turn chalky and pale. Repainting brings the color back, but the product matters: a general wall paint on vinyl or aluminum peels quickly, while a coating made for those surfaces holds up through the summer heat and the daily afternoon storms.
Functional shutters have a real job here. Bahama shutters provide shade and storm protection, and colonial storm shutters close over windows during hurricane season. Both take salt air on homes near the Gulf and the bays, so aluminum hardware corrodes and wood frames swell. We keep paint off moving parts and avoid letting heavy coatings bind the hinges. Many homes in HOA communities also follow an approved shutter color list, which we work within when you choose your finish and sheen.
Decorative shutters come off and get labeled by window. Storm shutters stay mounted, and we open them fully so we can reach all faces and protect the frame.
Shutters are washed, rinsed and dried. Peeling paint on wood is scraped and sanded. Vinyl and aluminum get a light scuff for grip without cutting into the surface.
Wood gets an exterior primer, aluminum gets a metal bonding primer, and vinyl gets a primer suited to plastic where needed. Bare spots and repairs are fully covered.
Two coats are sprayed for even louver coverage and brushed to work paint into corners. Backs and edges get coated, and each coat is allowed to dry before the next.
Shutters go back on their own windows with new fasteners as needed. We touch up any scuffs from installation and check that functional shutters move freely.
We price shutter painting after seeing the job, and the written quote lists every item below that applies.

Sometimes, with the right product. Vinyl absorbs heat and can warp if it gets much darker than its original color, and Sarasota sun makes that risk real. We use paints formulated for vinyl that reflect more heat, and we will tell you if a color you like is too dark for a given shutter and exposure.
Off, in most cases. Taking shutters down lets us paint every louver and edge evenly and keeps overspray off your stucco. It also exposes the wall behind, which we can paint at the same time. Bahama and colonial storm shutters usually stay mounted and are painted in place with careful masking.
We schedule around storms when possible and keep paint off hinges, arms and latches so the shutters still work. If a storm threatens mid-job, we make sure functional shutters can be closed. Fresh paint needs a few days to harden fully, so we avoid painting them right before an expected storm.
It is a classic approach, but not required. Matching shutters and front door gives a coordinated look, while a contrasting door can make the entrance stand out. In HOA communities, approved color lists may limit choices. We can bring samples to the walk-through so you can see them against your stucco.
